High-tech for construction, infrastructure, geotechnical engineering, and industry

Special nonwovens from Freudenberg Performance Materials can also be truly three-dimensional. The 3D concept is both powerful and versatile, meeting numerous requirements in terms of strength, flexibility, liquid management, compressibility, and other special performance criteria.

High-tech 3D mats – technology without limits

The development of our distinctive 3D-structured mats marks a real milestone – and has done so for over 60 years. What set new standards back then is now a proven industry standard with continuous technical development. Behind the manufacturing process is high-precision engineering: Endless polymer filaments are used to create a stable, functional matrix structure through intelligent fusion technology – tailor-made for the highest technical requirements. The possibilities for use are as limitless as the filaments themselves: in civil engineering, on green roofs, in sports facilities, as a component of industrial composites, and in many other demanding applications where function, durability, and precision are required.

  • Materials

We manufacture our high-performance 3D mats primarily from the thermoplastic polyamide 6 (PA6). This material offers an optimal combination of mechanical stability, temperature resistance, weather resistance, and durability – ideal for numerous technical applications. Depending on the requirements, we also use other polymers, always precisely tailored to meet the needs the respective application.

  • Requirements

The technical possibilities are as diverse as our customers' requirements. The structure of our 3D mats can be specifically adapted and, if necessary, combined with nonwovens, films, or functional membranes. Whether for drainage, ventilation, separation, or damping, the properties are tailored to the respective application. The result: customized functionality in every layer.

  • Flexibility

Our strength lies not only in the material, but also in the concrete implementation: we respond flexibel to your requirements – whether in terms of structural specifications, technical specifications, or economic objectives. Whether noise protection, vibration control, chemical or thermal resistance, dimensional stability, strength, or ease of installation – we develop the right solution for you.

3D mat structures – technology with function

Our 3D mats made of thermoplastic monofilaments are technical textiles with an open-pored, three-dimensional cross-linked structure. They are used wherever physical influences such as moisture, air, sound, pressure, or temperature need to be controlled – for example, in construction, infrastructure, industrial plant engineering, or technical products.

We manufacture 3D structures from polymer monofilaments in various weights and thicknesses and shape them into different profiles. This technology offers you a precisely controllable solution for demanding tasks as an invisible but functionally crucial component within a system. Depending on requirements, the mats can be single-layer, multi-layer, or combined with additional functional carriers such as nonwovens, membranes, or films – for applications with special requirements for vibration, separation, insulation, or drainage.

Schematic process

Manufacturing takes place in a continuous extrusion process. Molten thermoplasts are formed into fine monofilaments, which are spatially intertwined and selectively fused immediately after leaving the die. Through precise control of temperature, pressure, and movement, a stable, net-like 3D structure with defined height, porosity, and load-bearing capacity is created.

  • Open structure

With a cavity ratio of up to 95%, the three-dimensional filament structure allows liquids, air, or gases to flow freely – ideal for applications in moisture management, ventilation, or drainage.

  • Optimal elasticity

The 3D interwoven geometry can be designed to offer high compressive strength and resilience despite its low weight – perfect for applications where both load-bearing capacity and flexibility are required.

  • Versatile applications

The structure is suitable as a functional spacer material for a wide range of applications: from sound insulation under floor structures to thermal separation in roofs and integration into vertical wall panels.

  • Easy handling

The lightweight, flexible mats are either supplied in pre-cut rolls or can be cut to size on site for quick and easy installation.
