Foams that can do more – noticeably better

Freudenberg Performance Materials develops innovative foam solutions that are precisely tailored to the requirements of modern wound care and other medical applications. Whenever maximum absorption, reliable retention capacity, and uncompromising skin compatibility are required, our polyurethane foams are the right choice.

High-performance foams –
intelligent, highly absorbent, medically effective

Hydrophilic polyurethane foams from Freudenberg Performance Materials convince with their exceptional absorption performance and tested skin compatibility – ideal for demanding medical applications such as modern wound care. Thanks to their excellent absorbency and retention capacity, they can absorb up to 20 times their own weight in fluid – setting new standards in exudate management. Using precisely coordinated manufacturing processes, we produce foams in thicknesses ranging from 1.5 to 7.0 mm. The thinner versions can be ideally combined with nonwoven fabrics – for example, for multi-layer wound dressings that perfectly combine comfort, function, and efficiency. Benefit from technical precision, functional material structure, and a wide range of combination options – for greater performance in every layer.

Developed with medical standards in mind –
Soft. Strong. Reliable.

The foam manufacturing process at Freudenberg Performance Materials is based on the development of technical foams that are specifically formulated and manufactured for certain applications. These are not classic PU or comfort foams, but functional high-performance foams, e.g. for medical, filtration, hygiene, or acoustic applications. In addition, antimicrobial or other additives can be integrated into the foams via an innovative process step.

  • Very fine, uniform cell structure
  • High dimensional stability and resilience
  • Can be customized for specific functions
  • Latex-free, skin-friendly (for medical applications)

Schematic process

Foam production is carried out using the “pour-to-thickness” process, which is implemented with different material mixtures such as polyurethane, silicone, polyolefins, or other special polymers. The foam formulation is poured directly to the desired thickness, which allows for precise control of the material thickness. The material mixture is foamed by chemical reaction (e.g., with blowing agents) or physically (e.g., by gas injection). This creates open-cell or closed-cell pore structures, depending on the application. The foam is poured or extruded into blocks, sheets, or molds. It is then thermally fixed or cross-linked (e.g., in an oven or using UV light) to make it stable and durable.
